1968 Chevrolet C-60 | GMC and Chevrolet Medium duty trucks have almost forever been sharing common trucks with only slight styling differences. These could be grilles, badges, names, or simply between a bowtie or GMC in the front. Anyways, this page will start basically in the late 60's mediums, like the green truck pictured at right. For a long period of time, GM medium duties have been based on the full-size pickup's cab, if not their chassies and drivetrain. The advantage to this is having common styling throughout the model line, yet having more durable components. The mediums during this time were called the 40, 50, and 60 series for Chevy, and 4000, 5000, and 6000 for GMC. Based on a chassis that had been used for ages, there was a low-cab forward version, in the 50 and 60 series. This had been originally designed in the mid Fifties, and remained practically unchanged. |
Like the exterior, the trucks were almost exactly like the full-size pickups at that time, the 1968-1973 C/K pickups. They were spartan, yet normal for trucks at this time period. Of the two, the tilt was the moreso of the two. Due to the cab materials of the tilt, they were often referenced to by users and the factory as 'Steel Tilts'. The conventionals were often used for construction, bulk, and bus applications, whereas the tilts were primarily used for tractor-trailer and refuse applications.
Engines available at this time were both gas and diesel. The gases included the 250 or 292 CID Six, and the 350, 366, and 427 V8s. Diesels were either a Detroit Diesel 4-53N , or a Cummins DH478. Allison automatic transmission sat this time were only available as a 6 speed on conventionals. Tilts were stuck with manuals. Also, conventionals were available with PTOs, and even tandem axles, whereas tilts were not. Some heavy duty trucks were based off the mediums, called the 70, 80, and 90 series. These eventually changed to a different design, and evolved into the Brigadier and Bruin. The main difference was a different grille and wider fenders. Also, using the same tilt cab, the Heavy Duty tilts, as series 70 and 80. These were available with six and eight cylinder gas and diesel engines, along with tandem axles. The 90 series was the aluminum-cab version, also known as the Titan 90 or the GMC Astro.
1973 Chevrolet C-65 and Steel Tilt C-50 1974 GMC 6000 | In the early 1970s, the GM Medium duty range was completely renovated. The new line was based off the all-new design of full-size pickups that was recently introduced. These trucks featured fresh styling in the market, and with their ruggedness and affordability, they became fairly popular with people. The names for these trucks were the C-50, C-60, C-65 and the 5000, 6000, and 6500. As can be seen from this picture, the Steel Tilt models were continued with only minimal changes overall. |
1982 GMC Medium Duty High Sierra Interior | The interiors also were straight from the C/K pickups. For the Chevrolet, trim was offered in the usual Base, Cheynene, and Silverado trim levels. GMC offered Sierra, High Sierra, and Sierra Classic, respectively. All featured dashboards identical to the C/K pickups, with the addition of a few extra gauges. |
1981 GMC TopKick 7000 1985 Chevrolet Kodiak C-70 | In 1981, GM offered a new model to it's medium duty lineup. This was the heaviest model available, the C-70 and the 7000. These trucks were also given a name that was not just a number-the Chevrolet Kodiak and the GMC TopKick. These trucks sported an all-new fiberglass hood, with integrated fenders, and a slick front end treatment with low-mounted headlights and a wide grille emulating the Brigadier. These hoods were exclusive to the C-70 and 7000 trucks-only a steel aligator or a normal-looking fiberglass tilt hood. The main difference mechanical wise for the TopKick/Kodiak were two things. First, as the numerical name implies, it was able to have a greater GCWR weight rating then a normal medium duty. Also, the new Caterpillar 3208 diesel engine was standard in the Top Kick, and only the 8.2L 'Fuel Pincher' diesel V8 was offered in 'non-TopKick' models. Badging wise, TopKicks/ Kodiaks had exclusive name badges on the forward edge of the hood, with either a military insignia(TopKick) or paw print(Kodiak) with it. In the two-square badge in front of the doors, there was either the aforementioned logo with a DIESEL 70 or 7000 SERIES badge in the squares. |
Alberto Ibrham's 1986 GMC | These continued to be sold along for a while. GM started also importing it's medium duty trucks to South American countries, such as Argentina. This pristine example belongs to Alberto Ibrham, of , Argentina. The body mounted on it is called a skip loader, and is most commonly used overseas. |
